Bike Fit
GURU Dynamic Bike Fit offers cyclists a unique experience to improve their performance and comfort while on the bike. Our advanced algorithm and data-driven approach focuses on the individual needs of each cyclist, enabling them to dial in their exact optimal fit. This in turn increases power output, reduces fatigue, and can even reduce the risk of injury. Thanks to GURU’s Dynamic Bike Fit system, cyclists can now reach their personal best with maximum accuracy and efficiency.
- Improved comfort and lowered chance of injury
- Improved performance
- Improved technique
- Better equipment selection and money savings
- Peace of mind knowing you are riding safely and efficiently
- Increased power output with the same amount of effort and energy
The Process
A bike fit begins by simply getting to know the athlete. What is their cycling history, goals they intend to achieve, past or previous injuries, and mobility. Not only will this help with achieving an optimal fit, it helps with understanding the individual athlete and their expectations of the process.
The Watt Shop uses the GURU Dynamic Fit Unit for all disciplines of cycling. Every fit has three objectives, with a strong emphasis towards the style of cycling that the athlete intends to be doing. Meeting these objectives are critical to optimizing the athlete’s position to produce the most amount of power and minimize the potential for overuse injuries.
- Comfort – rather it be in training or a race, you must be able to sustain the position, without pain or discomfort for the duration of the event.
- Optimization of Power Output – by focusing on objective measurements from the hips to the feet we will position the athlete in a manner that promotes power with using the least amount of energy.
- Aerodynamics – Simply shaping the athlete to reduce resistive forces.
How Are These Objectives Met?
These objectives are met by focusing on all contact points with the bike.
- Foot to Pedal – Cleat placement is identified and positioned to maximize power output and minimize overuse injury.
- Pelvis to Saddle – How the athlete sits on the saddle is critical to the overall fit. The saddle should provide structural support and soft tissue pressure relief where you need it.
- Hands to Handlebars – A comfortable hand placement will reduce strain and numbness and promote better handling of the front end of the bicycle.
Upon completion of the bike fit the athlete will be provided with a detailed report of the measurements identified to optimize their position. Included in the report will be Frame Stack and Frame Reach measurements that are generated by the GURU Bike Discovery Program. These measurements are used in determining proper frame sizing which can be used with any bike manufacturers geometry chart.
There are times when an athlete might need a slight adjustment to the fit for one reason or another. It’s important to know that in order to optimize the fit on your bike, the components need to match what the discovery was while doing the initial fit on the GURU DFU. That said, The Watt Shop wants all athletes to enjoy cycling to its fullest, without injury. A complimentary follow-up appointment for adjustments if needed, will be included with each fit.
What If I Already Have A Bike?
As often is the case, the athlete will already own the bicycle that they are requesting to be fit too. If this is you, The Watt Shop will simply take the measurements from your existing bicycle and transfer those measurements to the GURU DFU. Upon completing the bike fit, we will capture the measurements from the GURU DFU and transfer those back to your bicycle. Most times, there are component changes that will be required to match the fit. This is important to know as without matching the discovery from the GURU DFU, the fit will be altered one way or another. The Watt Shop will provide a list of components needed with the bike fit report.
An important note to understand is that there are times when an athlete will own a bicycle that is too small or too large for them to ride safely. It is the responsibility of the fitter to make sure the athlete understands the importance of a properly sized bicycle before they leave the shop. The process of the bike fit will optimize the athlete’s position to produce power and minimize overuse injuries. If the process is reversed to make a bicycle that is too small or large work, then the athlete’s position will be compromised.
What Size of Bike Do I Need?
If you’re in the process of purchasing a new bike and unsure of sizing, then a bike fit is highly suggested. This will provide you the confidence in purchasing the properly sized frame while taking the guessing game out of play. Not only will the bike fit provide you with the frame stack and frame reach measurements that are used for proper frame sizing. It will also provide you with component measurements and lengths that will help narrow down the exact frame that will optimize your fit.
The process of the bike fit alters slightly in the manner that we don’t have measurements from an existing bicycle. The Watt Shop will simply plug in measurements from an algorithm, based on the athlete’s height, into the GURU DFU, which will provide a safe starting position.
Upon completing the bike fit process, the fitter will capture measurements from the GURU DFU and provide a detailed bike fit report which will include frame stack and frame reach measurements that were generated from the GURU Bike Discovery Program. The fitter will discuss frame sizing and assist as needed in the decision buying process.
